Main Wedding Celebrations of Haryanvi Marriage

Like any other state in India, Haryana also takes pride in its customs based on Vedic Aryans traditions. Haryanvi Marriages are an elaborate affair which starts a month before the actual wedding ceremony. There are several rituals including following:

The rituals prior to wedding start with ‘Sagai’ or engagement ceremony in wedding in Haryana. It is followed by ‘Anguthi Pahanana’ in which wedding ring is presented to the bride by groom. Later, one month before the wedding, bride and the groom’s maternal uncles are invited in a ritual called ‘Bhat nutana.’ Then, Lord Ganesha is worshipped by both the families in ‘Ban baihana’ ritual. Further, ghee, turmeric and grounded barley paste is used by the bride's family as a fairness cream in ritual known as the ‘Pithi lagana.’ After this, in ‘Banori’ ritual, the groom and the bride are served meal at the house of priest. Later, several rituals known as Khichai, Ratijka, Mehndi lagana and Chak Puja are carried out till ‘Barat nikasi’, in which groom departs for the wedding venue by riding on a horse with vibrant decorations. On this occasion, groom’s dress contains a long jacket known as sherwani over a churidar and turban having a brooch. With this, the wedding procession marches while the participants dance in front on rhythms played on the ‘dholak.’
